A lotus pond in xieyi ink-wash — bold expressive black strokes laying down the leaves, jade and soft pink bleeding in for the water and the blossoms. The painting is mostly cream paper, almost half empty, and the emptiness is part of the composition. One of the older traditions of painting I keep coming back to. The square format flattens the pond, makes it read as something looked down into rather than across.
