A luminous indigo field, slow and breathing, with burnt gold rising from underneath as if the canvas itself were on fire from below. The forms aren't drawn — they emerge from the layered washes, suggestions rather than statements. The painting takes a long time to look at, on purpose. Stand in front of it for a minute and the gold seems to move. A piece I keep close to the studio door so visitors stop on the way out.
